WHO WE ARE
Canada Karelia Society is a non-profit Association which promotes commerce and economic development between Canada and the Republic of Karelia, Russian Federation. The main objective of the Canada Karelia Society is to assist business and economic development as well as information exchange between organizations in the City of Vancouver, Western Canada, the Republic of Karelia, it’s capital city Petrozavodsk and the neighbouring regions of North west Russia.
WHAT WE DO
For instance, Canada Karelia Society initiated and co-organized in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development of the Republic of Karelia and the General Consulate of Canada in Saint-Petersburg a presentation of economic potential and business opportunities focussing on Canadian Business interests and entrepreneurs. The presentation was supported by the fund of the Northern Initiative of the General Consulate of Canada in Saint-Petersburg.

Forest Industry Complex of Karelia
The economy of the Republic is traditionally based upon forest resources. The share of marketable goods of the forest industry complex (FIC) with respect to total volume of production is about 40%. More than half of all employed work in the forest industry. FIC products of the republic occupy a significant place on the Russian market. The share of Karelia takes up 24% of all-Russian paper production, 35% – of newsprint, 6% – of merchantable wood, 4% – sawn timber, 3% – chipboards, 59% – of paper sacks. The forest industry complex of Karelia is represented by: – 30 large logging companies; – 10 specialized saw-mills; – 3 pulp and paper mills (ОАО “Kondopoga”, ОАО “Segezhsky PPM”, ОАО “PM Pitkyaranta”).
MINERAL RESOURCE BASE
The mineral resource base of the Republic includes the following minerals: fuel and energy raw materials (uranium, peat), ferrous metals (iron and chrome ore), non-ferrous and rare metals (nickel, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum, lead, etc.), precious metals (gold and metals of platinum group, non-metallic minerals (diamonds, graphite, mica-muscovite, talc and talcum stone, arkose, quartz, shungite rocks, quartzite, dolomite, kainite, petrugical raw material, building stone, sand and gravel materials, clays, garnet, diatomite, mineral dyes and others). The mineral resource base of Karelia includes 312 developed deposits of 26 kinds of solid minerals with registered reserves and over 400 perspective manifestations; 379 peat deposits; 13 deposits of underground drinking water, 3 deposits of mineral water and others. From the above mentioned kinds of minerals those under development are: iron ores (Kostomuksha deposit), arkose and quartz (Hetolambina deposit), shungite (Zazhoginskoye deposit), petrugical raw material (Havchozerskoye deposit), there is extraction of medicinal mud and mineral water (Gabozero and Martial Waters deposits), underground water deposits are operated. Perspective and prepared for domestic use and export are stone building materials. Among the top priority survey and development objects is a large number of deposits with high outcrop of highly decorative large block stone.
AGROINDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
There are more than 1000 companies, farms and agricultural consumer cooperatives (including 322 economic types of fish industry). Dairy farming, plant cultivation, fishing and fish breeding are well developed. The processing and food industry forms the basis for the food supply of the region.
